Name: Fern Green
Age: Somewhere around 23
Canon: Awful Hospital: Seriously the Worst Ever
History: There's not a lot details about Fern's life that have been privy to the reader at this point, so lots of inferences have to be made. She lived a relatively normal life before arriving at the Hospital. Did a lot of odd jobs, whatever to pay the bills, saving up for the future or any potential college plans. Barring some mentions of being in shady bars being "up to no good", she was a normal woman who made some mistakes.

Not really knowing what "asexual/aromantic" was, she decided to give dating a shot. After experimenting for a while, she concluded that relationships weren't for her. However, her most recent fling had left her pregnant. With the father not in the picture, she decided to try raising the child herself, hoping to do something right. As it turned out, motherhood was something that came naturally to her. She loved the little guy more than anything. Finally satisfied with her lot in life, she even started looking into college classes to better support her son.

Then he got sick. Horribly sick. Fern quickly became desperate to find any kind of cure, everything from injections, pills, cream. His skin was growing too fast, he was glowing green, he was literally falling apart at the seams. Everything seemed to make him worse. Much worse. He eventually got sick enough that he and Fern was whisked away to the Hospital.

For lack of a better term, the Hospital is an interdimensional facility that deals with medical problems across the multiverse. The doctors are experts in their fields at home, but are ill-equipped to deal with the ridiculous patients they come across, especially "greyzoners" like humans. Greyzoners are practically unheard of in the Hospital, with their weird concepts of "dying is permanent" or "needing blood to live". Terrified of what they might do to her son, Fern began a desperate search.

AND THEN A LOT OF STUFF HAPPENED THAT I'LL TRY TO KEEP BRIEF.
- She helped out her fellow patients, a fetch quest that soon turned into a genuine fondness for these "monsters" when they encouraged her to find her son.
- She accidentally murdered some sentient kidney stone babies and then had to kill the angry mother kidney stone in self-defense. They two mothers reached an understanding as the kidney stone died and Fern adopted one of the remaining kidney stone babies for the time being.
- She helped the cafeteria make their sloppy joes, although she probably didn't want to be the sloppy joe.
- A talking door(?) tried to make her eat the sloppy joe made from herself.
- She died a LOT. Then went into one of her former corpses and befriended some worms/bacteria. She brought a bag of flies to life and then watched it sacrifice himself for her.
- She came to terms with the fact her son's disease might be bad enough that he has to be killed for the safety of the multiverse.
- She met another human named Jay who's kind of a huge, monster-hating asshole. She also began to realize that she might be green.

So basically, Fern's seen a lot of shit.

Canon Point: Fern's first canon point should be just before her arrival in the Hospital, during the later stages of her son's sickness. Her second/real canon point is after fighting a recently infected/monstrous Jay, falling unconscious after finally beating him.
Memories:
- Waking up in the Hospital and meeting the incompetent Hospital staff.
- Killing the Kidney Stone Mom and their heart-to-heart as she passes.
- Enjoying a campfire in her own corpse with sentient worms.
- Watching her surrogate bag-of-flies son sacrifice himself just so she can cross a river.
- Talking with Jay, learning that she looks green, the same color as her son.
- Being comforted by the Bloodstain as she realizes her son might need to die.
- Encountering a room full of her corpses.
- Meeting Dr. Mann and receiving his explanation of the multiverse
Material Regains: GIVEN THE CONTENT HERE, I've put some warnings.
- Kidney Stone Baby (sentient but too young to do anything)
- Sloppy "Joe" (trigger warnings for cannibalism)
- a bag of flies (non-sentient)
- an storybook about a sentient cake that wants everyone to die
- Get Well Cupcake (I swear this one is actually normal)

Basic alignment: Fern's good. She's a good person. She's willing to help out pretty much anyone, regardless of appearance and is relatively understanding. That said, she's willing to do anything to get her son back. She's killed lots of monsters during her quest, albeit mostly in self-defense and only feels slightly bad about it. Despite her objections and massive guilt, she still allowed the sentient bag of flies to kill himself forever for her. On the other end of the spectrum, she also understands that, if her son really is a threat to the multiverse, she just wants to be there when he's killed. She understands that things aren't black and white everywhere and is willing to do gray things for selfish or "good" reasons. So neutral good.

Strengths and Weaknesses: Fern is best defined by her determination. Upon hearing that her son's been kidnapped, she immediately threatens the doctor keeping him and begins an epic journey to get him back. Despite dying numerous times and surrounded by creatures with unfathomable moralities and beliefs, she never lets it stop her for long. On more than one occasion, someone threatening her son was enough for her to fight back harder than she was before. Her heroic willpower, for lack of a better word, is enough to fight against mind control and other mental attacks.

But perhaps Fern's biggest strength, above all else, is her maternal instinct. She's gone above and beyond in her attempts to save her son, doing things no one in the history of the Hospital's accomplished. She's befriended and aided numerous monsters over the course of her journey and is sympathetic to their plights. Despite their different moralities, she gets along with the worms as long as they don't eat her corpse in front of her. She's immensely caring to those she sees as children, from a bag-of-flies she's only known for a few minutes to a kidney stone. Anyone that helps her out or is at least nice earns her loyalty. Even if you're rude, she'll at least try to help out or be pleasant. Crossing or threatening her is what draws the line.

That said, Fern is only human. She makes a lot of assumptions about the creature around her before it becomes apparent what kind of creatures they are. She dismissed a sentient runny nose as a whiner until he sincerely wishes her luck on her adventures. She assumed a sentient hamburger was going to murder her before it set down his knife to shake her hand. In battle, she's often unnecessarily harsh and gets referred to as a "Barbarian Hero" by one of her close worm friends.

By contrast, she also finds herself being a little too trusting. She lets herself fall into a trap in the cafeteria, causing her to be cooked into a sloppy joe. She agrees to help the suspicious Dr. Balmer and is genuinely surprised when he double crosses her.

On some level, Fern's adapted to the bizarre world around her. Her first encounter with one of her own corpses lead to a panic attack. Later incidents merit only a roll of the eyes and a "WHATEVER". At one points, she finds it weird that a none of the body parts in one room are trying to talk to her. She's learned to be a little more reserved with her information and even finds herself trusting creepy-looking monsters over humans like Dr. Mann and Jay. She's often plain-spoken and avoids any unnecessary words, while everyone around her rambles about interdimensional whatsits. She comes off as dim-witted to the creatures around her, despite the fact she's slowly grasping the concepts of "zones" as dimensions and "layers" as a fragment of time. That said, it takes her a while to grasp the basics and can be slow on the up-take.

Fern can be described, simply, as a human in an inhuman world. The key difference between canon points is how much of an inhuman world has she adjusted to, for her own sanity

Skills and Abilities:
- Fern's got exceptional willpower with an ability to resist mental manipulation.
- Due to the unique way Awful Hospital approaches interactive webcomics (like early Homestuck), Fern has limited awareness of the 4th wall. She perceives comments/suggestions as "strange voices" although she largely prefers ignoring them. She'd probably only be able to pick up a few random mentions of "plurk" and such, but I'm willing to forego this power entirely if its a dealbreaker.
- Stabbing things really hard.
Motives: Her son. He's the most important thing in her life and making sure he's okay. She would also be tempted by the possibility of saving someone else. For example, killing someone to bring the bag-of-flies back to life. She might even be willing to let someone else kill her if she suspected she was carrying the same disease as her son. [This is a game based around murder. What would motivate your character to kill, or what are some things that are very important to them – perhaps more than life itself?]
Sample: Test Drive thread

Plot Involvement:

Would you prefer that your character be a victim, a culprit, or do you have no preference? No preference, I'm up for anything.
Would you like to volunteer to have your character killed off? If it required and no one else signed up for it, sure.
Would you be willing to have your character be a mole/killswitch for the Adjudicator? Sure, but she'd be sassy about it.
